Career Step Medical Transcription Course Review

Career Step Medical Transcription Course ReviewI want to share my personal experience with Career Step.

Once I decided that I wanted to work from home as a medical transcriptionist I wasn’t sure which school to go to.  In fact, when I tell people that I do medical transcription the first thing they usually ask me is how did I learn to do it.

How I Compared Schools

When I was researching schools, I was still working full-time and had a new baby.  My time was limited and I wanted to use it as efficiently as possible.  I compared each of the schools based on how long it would take, cost and the program description.  I read reviews online of the different schools.  Just like with any review I always take them with a grain of salt.  Each person comes from a different background, has different expectations and skills.  There were people on the message boards that said Career Step was the best.  There were also people who thought that the “rival” schools were better.

Being a Career Step Student

I did and still do think Career Step was the best school for me.  Career Step had one of the most affordable and detailed programs.  The program could be completed online in a year or less, which I thought was reasonable for a new skill and profession.  I did order the optional books because I wanted to take advantage of the time I was not near a computer.  I studied every minute I could.  At first, I learned a lot of vocabulary and grammar.  The next portion of the course was transcribing.  It did take some time to get used to the foot pedal.  It took even more time to figure out what on earth those doctors were trying to say!  At the end of the course there is a final exam.  This exam is difficult.  They don’t just pass you so they can give you a certificate and move along to the next student.  I did not pass the first time.

I was a bit disappointed with myself.  Who likes to fail?  No one.  Career Step gave me information so that I could prepare for the retake.  I went through the books and exercises online.  Once again I spent every second I could studying.  I took the exam again and passed with Honors!  I was very relieved and proud of myself.

Conclusion

I have recommended Career Step to many people based on my experience with them.  They have changed the program a little since I took it.  I completed it about 4 years ago so some things have changed.  If you would like more information about the program, cost, and financial aid, please visit the Career Step Medical Transcription* page.  Mention my referral code (ref22473) and receive a $50 discount when you signed up.
